To view the court yard octagon we focus on the distance, = a, from the center of Castel Del Monte to the first octagon sides.
FIGURE 1.

We then paint the court yard and first of several external regions. The distance from the center of Castel Del Monte to the inside of the outer castle wall is equal to two times a. So the next sets of parallel line segments form the inside of the outer castle wall.
FIGURE 2.

We can paint the interior region of the castle yellow to make the following information easer to see.
Make a copy of the last drawing, Figure 2, and label the points P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6, P7, P8, P9, B, G, H, I, K, O and V. The location of some of these points such as P8 and P9 will depend on intersections of lines constructed in the next step.
Next construct the line segments {P3, P4}, {P8, P9} using points B and P7, {P5, P6}, {O, P1} through H and B, {O, P7} and on to the vertex in that direction.
Trapezoid HKIG is the outer castle wall and segment {G, H} and {K, I} are sides of two octagons that form the castle towers. The line segment {H, K} is the inner castle wall and the extended line through this {H, K} segment help to define another side of each castle tower octagon.
